It happend to us as well. We could play together when we were on the same network but not when everyone were at their own homes. It is something with non-static ip. We when you use a vpn that puts you on the same "virtual Lan" it works. There are many options out there. We found Zero Tier One to work great with very low ping.In multiplayer, the game is not playable. Half of the command does not work specifically on the snow plow on the tractor, when the "v" button is pressed, it does not react at all. It reacts with the mouse. The Giants are not fixing the problems. I don't think this was the case with previous versions FS.
There can be many reasons why connecting to multiplayer games can fail but try these first. Only dedi servers run 24 hours when your not playing so if YOUR game is standered multiplayer then your friends are not connecting to your game as your not in the game which you need to be for them to be able to play.
